Under Heavy Fire, Myanmar Defends Position on Rohingya Crisis Before UN Security Council

500,000 Rohingyas have fled for their lives to Bangladesh from Burma (Myanmar) and U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said “The situation has spiraled into the world’s fastest developing refugee emergency, a humanitarian and human rights nightmare,”. Yet, Myanmar has insisted that there has been no ethnic cleansing of the region’s Rohingya Muslim population and dismissing media reports of army abuses as “malicious and unsubstantiated chatter.”
